Folded letter cancelled on board Massachusetts 6/12/1912. Letter was written by Midshipman Forrest Knox Libenow, US Naval Academy Class of 1915, at the start of the 1912 Midshipman Cruise at the end of his first academic year at the Academy.
Lovely letter to his mother in Spokane, Washington. "If Mother could only see me now" has been my thoughts quite frequently since we started our cruise ... If you could see some of the stuff we have to eat and which I eat you'd take great delight."
And my favorite excerpt: "The sailors except for a few moral faults, seem to be as fine a bunch of fellows as ever one could run across..."
